Gell-Mann introduced the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quarks\" class=\"\" title=\"Quarks\">quarks<\/a> as the fundamental building blocks of the strongly interacting particles, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renormalization_group\" title=\"Renormalization group\">renormalization group<\/a> as a foundational element of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quantum_field_theory\" title=\"Quantum field theory\">quantum field theory<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statistical_mechanics\" title=\"Statistical mechanics\">statistical mechanics<\/a>. He played key roles in developing the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chirality\" title=\"Chirality\">chirality<\/a> in the theory of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weak_interaction\" title=\"Weak interaction\">weak interactions<\/a> and spontaneous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chiral_symmetry_breaking\" title=\"Chiral symmetry breaking\">chiral symmetry breaking<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strong_interaction\" title=\"Strong interaction\">strong interactions<\/a>, which controls the physics of the light <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meson\" title=\"Meson\">mesons<\/a>.
