In their study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42255-025-01244-7\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>Nature Metabolism<\/i>, the group analyzed MRI scans of marathon runners before and after a race and then at later intervals to learn more about how participating in long races impacts the brain.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/editors\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">editors<\/a> at the journal have published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42255-025-01251-8\" target=\"_blank\">Research Briefing<\/a> that outlines the work in the same issue and suggest that the team\u2019s findings could influence the understanding of brain metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers recruited 10 runners\u2014eight male and two female\u2014and performed MRI scans of their brains before they ran a 42K marathon. They administered a second scan 24 to 48 hours later.
