There\u2019s the resistor, capacitor, and inductor, but Chua believed there also existed a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/health\/a29961699\/device-imitates-natural-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">memristor<\/a>\u201d\u2014 a portmanteau of \u201cmemory\u201d and \u201cresistor\u201d that described a simple, non-volatile memory component that could store information even when turned off.<\/p>\n<p>This sounds like a simple function, but it provides the technological foundation of neuromorphic (a.k.a. brain-like) computing\u2014an effective memristor would essentially act as an artificial synapse in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a63633889\/deepseek-open-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">AI<\/a> neural net, as it can achieve both data storage and computation at the same time (which is something our brain does).
