New results from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.desi.lbl.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">DESI<\/a>) collaboration use the largest 3D map of our universe ever made to track dark energy\u2019s influence over the past 11 billion years. Researchers see hints that dark energy, widely thought to be a \u201ccosmological constant,\u201d might be evolving over time in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n<p>DESI is an international experiment with more than 900 researchers from more than 70 institutions around the world and is managed by the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). The collaboration shared their findings today in <a href=\"https:\/\/data.desi.lbl.gov\/doc\/papers\/\" target=\"_blank\">multiple papers<\/a> that will be posted on the online repository <i>arXiv<\/i> and in a presentation at the <a href=\"https:\/\/summit.aps.org\/events\/APR-R08\/3\" target=\"_blank\">American Physical Society\u2019s Global Physics Summit<\/a> in Anaheim, California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing is deeply intriguing,\u201d said Alexie Leauthaud-Harnett, co-spokesperson for DESI and a professor at UC Santa Cruz. \u201cIt is exciting to think that we may be on the cusp of a major discovery about dark energy and the fundamental nature of our <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/universe\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">universe<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The fate of the universe hinges on the balance between matter and dark energy: the fundamental ingredient that drives its accelerating expansion.
