But patients with certain traumatic injuries have better outcomes when administered specific blood components.<\/p>\n<p>University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC scientist-surgeons report in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.xcrm.2025.102022\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Cell Reports Medicine<\/i><\/a> that giving <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/plasma\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">plasma<\/a> that has been separated from other parts of donated blood improves outcomes in patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/traumatic+brain+injury\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">traumatic brain injury<\/a> (TBI) or shock, whereas giving unseparated or \u201cwhole\u201d blood may be best for patients with traumatic bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>Together, Pitt and UPMC have become home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.litesnetwork.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">largest clinical trials research consortium for early trauma care<\/a> in the U.S., allowing the research to benefit both soldiers and civilians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When someone is traumatically injured, giving them blood products before they arrive at the hospital\u2014such as at the scene or during emergency transport\u2014can improve their likelihood of survival and recovery.
