The plasma is superheated, which means some of the atoms involved can strike the wall of the fusion vessel and become embedded. To keep the system working efficiently, it\u2019s important to know how much fuel might be trapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe less fuel is trapped in the wall, the less radioactive material builds up,\u201d said Shota Abe, a staff research physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy\u2019s (DOE) Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL).<\/p>\n<p>Abe is the lead researcher on a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.nme.2024.101855\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> published in <i>Nuclear Materials and Energy<\/i>. The study looks specifically at how much <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/deuterium\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">deuterium <\/a>\u2014thought to be one of the best fuels for <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/fusion\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">fusion <\/a>\u2014might get stuck in the boron-coated, graphite walls of a doughnut-shaped fusion vessel known as a tokamak. Boron is used in some experimental fusion systems to reduce plasma impurities.
