In an article <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/jacs.4c17175\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the <i>Journal of the American Chemical Society<\/i>, a University of California, Irvine-led team describes the development of a drug candidate that can stop bacteria before they have a chance to cause harm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue with antibiotics is this crisis of antibiotic resistance,\u201d said Sophia Padilla, a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry and lead author of the new study. \u201cWhen it comes to antibiotics, <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/bacteria\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">bacteria<\/a> can evolve defenses against them\u2014they\u2019re becoming stronger and always getting better at protecting themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 35,000 people in the U.S. die each year from <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/antibiotic-resistant+bacterial+infections\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections<\/a> from pathogens like Staphylococcus, while about 2.8 million people suffer from bacteria-related illnesses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s an arms race in medicine\u2014scientists design drugs to treat lethal bacterial infections, but bacteria can evolve defenses to those drugs, sending the researchers back to square one.
