The particle\u2019s energy was estimated to be a whopping 220 petaelectronvolts (PeV) \u2013 for reference, the previous record-holder is a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/ac4d29\">paltry 10 PeV<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only a handful of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-highest-energy-photons-ever-have-been-detected-coming-from-the-crab-nebula\">astronomical objects<\/a> are capable of accelerating particles to such extreme energies, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/for-the-first-time-scientists-have-detected-cosmic-ray-superaccelerators-in-our-galaxy\">supernovae<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">black holes<\/a>.
