{"id":206071,"date":"2025-02-10T20:26:45","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T02:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/02\/physicists-stabilize-superconducting-states-at-ambient-pressure"},"modified":"2025-02-10T20:26:45","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T02:26:45","slug":"physicists-stabilize-superconducting-states-at-ambient-pressure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2025\/02\/physicists-stabilize-superconducting-states-at-ambient-pressure","title":{"rendered":"Physicists stabilize superconducting states at ambient pressure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/physicists-stabilize-superconducting-states-at-ambient-pressure.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Houston\u2019s Texas Center for Superconductivity have achieved another first in their quest toward ambient-pressure high-temperature superconductivity, bringing us one step closer to finding superconductors that work in everyday conditions\u2014and potentially unlocking a new era of energy-efficient technologies.<\/p>\n<p>In their study titled \u201cCreation, stabilization, and investigation at <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/ambient+pressure\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">ambient pressure<\/a> of pressure-induced superconductivity in Bi<sub>0.5 <\/sub>Sb<sub>1.5 <\/sub>Te<sub>3<\/sub>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2423102122\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the <i>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/i>, professors Liangzi Deng and Paul Ching-Wu Chu of the UH Department of Physics set out to see if they could push Bi<sub>0.5 <\/sub>Sb<sub>1.5 <\/sub>Te<sub>3<\/sub> (BST) into a <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/superconducting+state\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">superconducting state<\/a> under pressure\u2014without altering its chemistry or structure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2001, scientists suspected that applying high pressure to BST changed its Fermi surface topology, leading to improved thermoelectric performance,\u201d Deng said. \u201cThat connection between pressure, topology and superconductivity piqued our interest.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at the University of Houston\u2019s Texas Center for Superconductivity have achieved another first in their quest toward ambient-pressure high-temperature superconductivity, bringing us one step closer to finding superconductors that work in everyday conditions\u2014and potentially unlocking a new era of energy-efficient technologies.
