They combined iron, nickel, and zirconium, to create a new transition metal zirconide with different ratios of iron to nickel. The findings are <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S0925838824040301\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the Journal of Alloys and Compounds.<\/p>\n<p>While both iron zirconide and nickel zirconide are not superconducting, the newly prepared mixtures are exhibiting a \u201cdome-shaped\u201d phase diagram typical of so-called \u201cunconventional superconductors,\u201d a promising avenue for developing high temperature superconducting materials which can be more widely deployed in society.<\/p>\n<p>Superconductors already play an active role in cutting-edge technologies, from <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/superconducting+magnets\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">superconducting magnets<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/medical+devices\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">medical devices<\/a> and maglev systems to superconducting cables for power transmission.
