In fact, length contraction in special relativity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1TKSfAkWWN0\" target=\"_blank\">explains how electromagnets work<\/a>. A magnetic field is just an electric field seen from a different frame of reference.<\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto; width: 100%; aspect-ratio: 4\/3; object-fit: contain;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1TKSfAkWWN0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope;\n   picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So, when an electron moves in the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/electric+field\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">electric field<\/a> of another electron, this special relativistic effect results in the moving electron interacting with a magnetic field, and hence with the electron\u2019s spin angular momentum.<\/p>\n<p>The interaction of spin in a magnet field was, after all, how spin was discovered in the 1920 Stern Gerlach experiment. Eight years later, the pair spin-orbit interaction (or <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/spin-orbit+coupling\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">spin-orbit coupling<\/a>) was made explicit by Gregory Breit <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/pr\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRev.34.553\" target=\"_blank\">in 1928<\/a> and then found in Dirac\u2019s special relativistic quantum mechanics. This confirmed an equation for energy splitting of atomic energy levels developed by Llewellyn Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/117514a0\" target=\"_blank\">in 1926<\/a>, due to 1) the special relativistic magnetic field seen by the electron due to its movement (\u201corbit\u201d) around the positively charged nucleus, and 2) the electron\u2019s spin magnetic moment interacting with this <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/magnetic+field\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">magnetic field<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Observing the effects of special relativity doesn\u2019t necessarily require objects moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light.
