However, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/neural+networks\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">neural networks <\/a>\u2014computer models inspired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/human+brain\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">human brain <\/a>\u2014behind these machine learning systems have been difficult to understand, sometimes earning them the nickname \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/black+boxes\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">black boxes<\/a>\u201d among researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe create neural networks that can perform <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/specific+tasks\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">specific tasks<\/a>, while also allowing us to solve the equations that govern the networks\u2019 activity,\u201d said Lyle Muller, mathematics professor and director of Western\u2019s Fields Lab for Network Science, part of the newly created Fields-Western Collaboration Centre. \u201cThis mathematical solution lets us \u2018open the black box\u2019 to understand precisely how the network does what it does.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Western researchers have developed a novel technique using math to understand exactly how neural networks make decisions\u2014a widely recognized but poorly understood process in the field of machine learning.
