Putrid, methane-rich natural gas has been spewing into the air at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edf.org\/climate\/californias-massive-methane-leak\" target=\"_blank\">estimated<\/a> rate of nearly 1,300 metric tons per day for over two months. Experts are calling it the <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/a-california-gas-leak-is-the-biggest-environmental-disa-1749958081#_ga=1.18963256.1031241721.1425068057\">climate version of the BP oil spill<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/read\/why-we-cant-stop-the-enormous-methane-leak-flooding-la\" target=\"_blank\">the leak isn\u2019t going to be contained anytime soon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Natural gas is often touted as a cleaner energy source than oil or coal, because of the lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with burning it. But as this disaster highlights, there are insidious risk to natural gas production.
