{"id":202308,"date":"2024-12-24T14:03:32","date_gmt":"2024-12-24T20:03:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2024\/12\/filter-made-from-squid-bone-could-be-the-solution-to-microplastics"},"modified":"2024-12-24T14:03:32","modified_gmt":"2024-12-24T20:03:32","slug":"filter-made-from-squid-bone-could-be-the-solution-to-microplastics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2024\/12\/filter-made-from-squid-bone-could-be-the-solution-to-microplastics","title":{"rendered":"Filter Made From Squid Bone Could Be The Solution to Microplastics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/filter-made-from-squid-bone-could-be-the-solution-to-microplastics3.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, we know that microplastics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-study-detects-microplastics-in-human-brain-tissue\">are getting everywhere<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bottled-water-is-packed-full-of-up-to-100x-more-microplastic-than-expected\">our drinking water<\/a> \u2013 but researchers have developed a new way to tackle the problem: a filter made of a rather unusual combination of material, which is able to remove up to 99.9 percent of tiny plastic fragments from water.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers, led by a team from Wuhan University in China, combined both <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chitin\">chitin<\/a> (derived from squid bone) and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cellulose\">cellulose<\/a> (derived from cotton) for their \u2018Ct-Cel\u2019 foam filter. Both materials are found in abundance in nature, cheap to adapt, and sustainable.<\/p>\n<p>They then tested their filter against numerous different types of plastic, finding it did an excellent job with a wide variety of fragment sizes and plastic types \u2013 including some of those most commonly seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/almost-30-of-microplastics-come-from-a-hugely-overlooked-source\">microplastic pollution<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sadly, we know that microplastics are getting everywhere, including our drinking water \u2013 but researchers have developed a new way to tackle the problem: a filter made of a rather unusual combination of material, which is able to remove up to 99.9 percent of tiny plastic fragments from water.
