Scientists have long known how to measure the energies and velocities of electrons in crystalline materials, but until now, those systems\u2019 quantum geometry could only be inferred theoretically, or sometimes not at all.<\/p>\n<p>The work, reported in the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41567-024-02678-8\" target=\"_blank\">November 25 issue<\/a> of <i>Nature Physics<\/i>, \u201copens new avenues for understanding and manipulating the quantum properties of materials,\u201d says Riccardo Comin, MIT\u2019s Class of 1947 Career Development Associate Professor of Physics and leader of the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve essentially developed a blueprint for obtaining some completely new information that couldn\u2019t be obtained before,\u201d says Comin, who is also affiliated with MIT\u2019s Materials Research Laboratory and the Research Laboratory of Electronics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MIT physicists and colleagues have for the first time measured the geometry, or shape, of electrons in solids at the quantum level.
