In a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43018-024-00869-z\"><em>Nature Cancer<\/em><\/a>, researchers at Baylor College of Medicine revealed a powerful and unbiased machine learning-based approach called FunMap for assessing the role of cancer-associated mutations and understudied proteins, with broad implications for advancing cancer biology and informing therapeutic strategies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGaining functional information on the genes and proteins associated with cancer is an important step toward better understanding the disease and identifying potential therapeutic targets,\u201d said corresponding author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/people-search\/bing-zhang-33575\">Dr. Bing Zhang<\/a>, professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/department of molecular and human genetics\">molecular and human genetics<\/a> and part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/academic-centers\/lester-and-sue-smith-breast-center\" title=\"Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center\">Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center<\/a> at Baylor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur approach to gain functional insights into these genes and proteins involved using machine learning to develop a network mapping their functional relationships,\u201d said Zhang, member of Baylor\u2019s Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and a McNair Scholar. \u201cIt\u2019s like, I may not know anything about you, but if I know your LinkedIn connections, I can infer what you do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Large-scale protein and gene profiling have massively expanded the landscape of cancer-associated proteins and gene mutations, but it has been difficult to discern whether they play an active role in the disease or are innocent bystanders.
