Imaging applications in a range of fields\u2014such as security, surveillance, industrial research and diagnostics\u2014could benefit from the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s44172-024-00316-y\" target=\"_blank\">research findings<\/a>, which were reported in the journal <i>Communications Engineering.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay you want to use <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/thermal+imaging\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">thermal imaging<\/a> to monitor <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/chemical+reactions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">chemical reactions<\/a> in a high-temperature reactor chamber,\u201d said Gururaj Naik, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Rice and corresponding author on the study. \u201cThe problem you\u2019d be facing is that the thermal radiation emitted by the window itself overwhelms the camera, obscuring the view of objects on the other side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A possible solution could involve coating the window in a material that suppresses thermal light emission toward the camera, but this would also render the window opaque.
