As part of this mission, the ZTF\u2019s Bright Transient Survey has been counting and cataloging supernovae\u2014flashes of light in the sky that are the telltale signs of stars dying in spectacular explosions.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 4, ZTF researchers\u2014including astronomers at the University of Washington\u2014announced that they have identified more than 10,000 of these stellar events, the largest number ever identified by an astronomical survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are trillions of stars in the universe, and about every second, one of them explodes,\u201d said Christoffer Fremling, an astronomer at Caltech who leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.astro.caltech.edu\/ztf\/bts\/bts.php\" target=\"_blank\">Bright Transient Survey<\/a>. \u201cZTF detects hundreds of these explosions per night and a handful are then confirmed as <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/supernovae\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">supernovae<\/a>.
