In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-024-53195-4\" target=\"_blank\">new study<\/a> published in <i>Nature Communications<\/i>, FMI researchers have provided key insights into how protein interactions are governed and how mutations influence cellular functions.<\/p>\n<p>Proteins are the molecular machines of life, performing tasks ranging from driving <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/chemical+reactions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">chemical reactions<\/a> to orchestrating cell communication. For these tasks, proteins must bind to the right partners with precision, avoiding mispairings that could disrupt cellular processes and lead to disease.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have long been curious about how changes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/sequence+of+amino+acids\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">sequence of amino acids <\/a>\u2014the building blocks of proteins\u2014can alter a protein\u2019s binding capabilities. To investigate this question, researchers in the Diss lab analyzed the effects of all possible mutations in a single protein across its <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/interactions\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">interactions<\/a> with an entire family of partner proteins.
