These hard-to-detect sequences of genetic material can code for tiny proteins, some involved in disease processes like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cancer\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">cancer<\/a> and immunology, a global consortium of researchers has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>They may explain why past estimates of our genome\u2019s size were way larger than what the Human Genome Project discovered 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The new international study, still awaiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/science-peer-review\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">peer review<\/a>, shows our library of human genes very much continues to be a work in progress, as more subtle genetic features are picked up with advances in technology, and as continued exploration uncovers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-now-have-the-most-complete-gapless-sequence-of-the-human-genome-in-dazzling-detail\">gaps and errors in the record<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Junk DNA may not be so \u2018junky\u2019 after all \u2013 these regions may hide genetic material coding for tiny proteins involved in disease processes like cancer and immunology.
