While hypotheses abound as to what exactly this particle could be \u2014 if it exists at all \u2014 the most popular opinion seems to be that it\u2019s a heavier version of the Higgs boson, the particle that explains why other particles have mass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there is anyone around who thinks this is conclusive,\u201d one of the researchers, Kyle Cranmer from New York University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/16\/science\/physicists-in-europe-find-tantalizing-hints-of-a-mysterious-new-particle.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=second-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=1\">told<\/a> <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/16\/science\/physicists-in-europe-find-tantalizing-hints-of-a-mysterious-new-particle.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=second-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=1\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/em> \u201cBut it would be huge if true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a hiatus of more than two years, the LHC was fired up again in June to continue smashing particles together \u2014 this time at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-lhc-is-now-colliding-lead-ions-at-record-breaking-energy-levels\">record-breaking energy levels<\/a> of around <a href=\"http:\/\/press.web.cern.ch\/press-releases\/2015\/06\/lhc-experiments-are-back-business-new-record-energy\">13 trillion electron volts<\/a>.
