{"id":199749,"date":"2024-11-19T09:25:58","date_gmt":"2024-11-19T15:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/google-org-commits-20m-to-researchers-using-ai-for-scientific-breakthroughs"},"modified":"2024-11-19T09:25:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-19T15:25:58","slug":"google-org-commits-20m-to-researchers-using-ai-for-scientific-breakthroughs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/google-org-commits-20m-to-researchers-using-ai-for-scientific-breakthroughs","title":{"rendered":"Google.org commits $20M to researchers using AI for scientific breakthroughs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/google-org-commits-20m-to-researchers-using-ai-for-scientific-breakthroughs2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Google is committing $20 million in cash and $2 million in cloud credits to a new funding initiative designed to help scientists and researchers unearth the next great scientific breakthroughs using artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n<p>The announcement, made by Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/demishassabis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Demis Hassabis<\/a> during a fireside chat at the closed-door AI for Science Forum in London today, feeds into a broader push by Big Tech to curry favor with young innovators and startups, a strategy that has included <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/03\/19\/after-raising-1-3b-inflection-got-eaten-alive-by-its-biggest-investor-microsoft\/\">acqui-hires<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/anthropic-series-c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">equity investments<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/anthropic-partners-with-google-cloud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">cloud partnerships<\/a> \u2014 some of which has <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/04\/24\/uk-probes-amazon-and-microsoft-over-ai-partnerships-with-mistral-anthropic-and-inflection\/\">attracted the attentions<\/a> of regulators.<\/p>\n<p>This latest announcement, via Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2005\/10\/about-googleorg.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">19-year-old<\/a> philanthropic arm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Google.org<\/a>, is different in that it centers on non-equity funding for academic and non-for-profit institutions globally. But similar to other Big Tech funding and partnership initiatives, this will go some way toward helping Google ingratiate itself with some of the leading scientific minds, through direct cash injections and by providing infrastructure to power their projects.
