Researchers at ETH Zurich have now been able to show that this is all down to epigenetics.<\/p>\n<p>Epigenetics is the part of genetics that\u2019s based not on the sequence of genetic <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/building+blocks\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">building blocks<\/a>, but on small yet characteristic chemical markers on these building blocks. The sequence of building blocks has evolved over a long period of time; we all inherit them from our parents.<\/p>\n<p>Epigenetic markers, on the other hand, are more dynamic: <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/environmental+factors\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">environmental factors<\/a>, our <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/eating+habits\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">eating habits<\/a> and the condition of our body\u2014such as obesity\u2014can change them over the course of a lifetime.
