If their timing is off, they might be taken as overly aggressive, too timid, or just plain awkward.<\/p>\n<p>The back-and-forth is the social element to the exchange of information that occurs in a <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/conversation\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">conversation<\/a>, and while humans do this naturally\u2014with some exceptions\u2014AI language systems are universally bad at it.<\/p>\n<p>Linguistics and computer science researchers at Tufts have now discovered some of the root causes of this shortfall in AI conversational skills and point to possible ways to make them better conversational partners. Their study results will be presented at the Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing (<a href=\"https:\/\/2024.emnlp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">EMNLP 2024<\/a>) conference, held in Miami from November 12 to 16, and are <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2410.16044\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> to the <i>arXiv<\/i> preprint server.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at Tufts University have identified root causes for AI\u2019s poor conversational timing.
