AI promises breakthroughs in fields like medicine, education, and energy, with the potential to solve some of society\u2019s toughest challenges. But at the same time, fears around job displacement, privacy, and <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/18\/nx-s1-5153741\/ai-images-hurricanes-disasters-propaganda\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">the spread of misinformation<\/a> have led many to call for tighter government control.<\/p>\n<p>Many are now seeking swift government intervention to regulate AI\u2019s development <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/punchbowl.news\/article\/tech\/big-tech-urges-congress-to-formalize-ai-safety-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">in the waning \u201clame duck\u201d session<\/a> before the inauguration of the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/congress\" class=\"\">Congress<\/a>. These efforts have been led by tech giants, including OpenAI, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/amazon\" class=\"\">Amazon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/google\" class=\"\">Google<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/microsoft\" class=\"\">Microsoft<\/a>, under the guise of securing \u201c<a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itic.org\/documents\/artificial-intelligence\/20241021ITI_ARIOctoberAISIHillLetter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">responsible development of advanced AI systems<\/a>\u201d from risks like misinformation and bias. Building on the Biden administration\u2019s executive order to create the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (AISI) and mandate that AI \u201csafety tests,\u201d <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/10\/30\/fact-sheet-president-biden-issues-executive-order-on-safe-secure-and-trustworthy-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">among other things<\/a>, be reported to the government, the bipartisan negotiations would permanently authorize the AISI to act as the nation\u2019s primary AI regulatory agency.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is, the measures pushed by these lobbying campaigns favor large, entrenched corporations, sidelining smaller competitors and stifling innovation. If Congress moves forward with establishing a federal AI safety agency, even with the best of intentions, it risks cementing Big Tech\u2019s dominance at the expense of startups. Rather than fostering competition, such regulation would likely serve the interests of the industry\u2019s largest corporations, stifling entrepreneurship and limiting AI\u2019s potential to transform America\u2014and the world\u2014for the better.
