Here\u2019s why it\u2019s difficult to harness\u2014and why it could big a big payoff.<\/p>\n<p>As we <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/the-future-will-run-on-algae-1716861120\">previously<\/a> reported, algae is a fuel source that\u2019s vastly more eco-friendly than oil, and will be crucial as we head into a future filled with climate change and depleting fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, a <a href=\"http:\/\/algaebiomass.org\/algae-biofuel-can-cut-co2-emissions-by-more-than-50-compared-to-petroleum-fuels-finds-new-peer-reviewed-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> published in the journal <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960852413013631\" target=\"_blank\">Bioresource Technology<\/a> <\/em>reported that algal fuels can cut carbon dioxide emissions by 50 to 70 percent. It\u2019s also more efficient than other biofuels, like those derived from corn.
