Outside of the laboratory, she moonlights as a musician. Di Ventura harmonizes her passion for art and science in <a href=\"https:\/\/diventura.biologie.uni-freiburg.de\/?page_id=2033\" target=\"_blank\">musical abstracts<\/a>, using a guitar to riff about her latest research, transforming scientific communication into a lively experience.<\/p>\n<p><b>What inspired you to start creating musical abstracts?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I was inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/mcb\/UriAlon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Uri Alon<\/a>, a systems biologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science, who played the guitar and sang songs about his group\u2019s projects in an entertaining way. Then in 2021, we published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41589-021-00787-6\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> on a novel optogenetic tool for controlling gene expression in bacteria, and I had this vision to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/barbara_synbio\/status\/1392883368203853831\" target=\"_blank\">write a song<\/a> about it.<sup>1<\/sup> We\u2019re constantly asked to describe our work in new ways despite the numerous figures we produce. To me, writing song lyrics is easier than new text.
