However, in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.aip.org\/aip\/aml\/article\/2\/3\/036107\/3309296\/Quantum-tunneling-deep-neural-network-for-optical\" target=\"_blank\">new research<\/a> published in <i>APL Machine Learning<\/i>, I have used a phenomenon called \u201cquantum tunneling\u201d to design a neural network that can \u201csee\u201d optical illusions in much the same way humans do.<\/p>\n<p>My neural network did well at simulating human perception of the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/zenodo.org\/records\/1430991\" target=\"_blank\">Necker cube<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/psychologist\/looking-back-figure-and-ground-100\" target=\"_blank\">Rubin\u2019s vase<\/a> illusions\u2014and in fact better than some much larger conventional <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/neural+networks\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">neural networks<\/a> used in computer vision.<\/p>\n<p>This work may also shed light on the question of whether <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/artificial+intelligence\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">artificial intelligence<\/a> (AI) systems can ever truly achieve something like human cognition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Optical illusions, quantum mechanics and neural networks might seem to be quite unrelated topics at first glance.
