The team has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2408.03906\" target=\"_blank\">paper<\/a> on the <i>arXiv<\/i> preprint server describing how they developed the robot, how well it performed at different ability levels and how human players responded to playing with the robot.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past several years, robot scientists have been combining advancements in <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/robot+design\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">robot design<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/artificial+intelligence\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, resulting in the development of robots with ever increasing abilities. In this new effort, the research team has developed an AI-based ping-pong player with the highest performance level ever for a robot.<\/p>\n<p>To build their robot system, the researchers started with a <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/robot+arm\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">robot arm<\/a> called the ABB IRB 1100\u2014the robot is currently used in real-world <a href=\"https:\/\/techxplore.com\/tags\/industrial+applications\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">industrial applications<\/a>. In addition to its ability to manipulate its arm and hand very quickly, it can also quickly slide side-to-side on a rail.
