It\u2019s almost as if physics is fundamentally indecisive, a truth that gets harder to ignore as we zoom in on the particles that pixelate our Univerrse.<\/p>\n<p>In order to better understand it, physicists had to devise an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quantum_mechanics\">entirely new framework<\/a> to place it in, one based on probability over certainty. This is quantum theory, and it describes all sorts of phenomena, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/entanglement\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">entanglement<\/a> to superposition.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in spite of a century of experiments showing just how useful quantum theory is at explaining what we see, it\u2019s hard to shake our \u2018classical\u2019 view of the Universe\u2019s building blocks as reliable fixtures in time and space. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/articles\/2007\/08\/16\/einstein-an-exchange\">Einstein was forced<\/a> to ask his fellow physicist, \u201cDo you really believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/moon\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">the Moon<\/a> is not there when you are not looking at it?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the very smallest scales, our intuitive view of reality no longer applies.
