Despite being a vibrant area of neuroscience, current research on consciousness is characterised by <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/nc\/article\/2022\/1\/niac001\/6523097?login=false\">disagreement<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/gb\/blog\/theory-of-knowledge\/202310\/a-fight-breaks-out-in-the-science-of-consciousness\">controversy<\/a> \u2013 with several rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41583-022-00587-4\">theories<\/a> in contention.<\/p>\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33923218\/\">scoping review<\/a> of over 1,000 articles identified over 20 different theoretical accounts. Philosophers like David Chalmers argue that no single scientific theory can truly explain <a href=\"https:\/\/philpapers.org\/rec\/CHATCM\">consciousness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We define consciousness as embodied subjective awareness, including self awareness.
