Namely, treatments can cause dyskinesia, a form of uncontrollable movements and postures.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jneurosci.org\/lookup\/doi\/10.1523\/JNEUROSCI.0050-24.2024\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>The Journal of Neuroscience<\/i>, researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham took a different approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/dyskinesia\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">dyskinesia<\/a> and treated it like a \u201cbad motor memory.\u201d They found that blocking a protein called Activin A could halt dyskinesia symptoms and effectively erase the brain\u2019s \u201cbad memory\u201d response to certain Parkinson\u2019s treatments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of looking for a completely alternative treatment, we wanted to see if there was a way to prevent dyskinesia from developing in the first place,\u201d said David Figge, M.D., Ph.D., lead study author and assistant professor in the UAB Department of Pathology. \u201cIf dyskinesia does not occur, then patients could potentially stay on their Parkinson\u2019s treatment for longer.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Common treatments for Parkinson\u2019s disease can address short-term symptoms, but can also cause extensive problems for patients in the long run.
