Is it a simple open expanse, like a bigger version of the spaces we\u2019re used to? Does it wrap around on itself like a donut? Or something even stranger?<\/p>\n<p>Now, new research published <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.132.171501\" class=\"\">in the journal <em>Physical Review Letters<\/em><\/a>, in the inaugural paper from a new consortium of cosmologists known as the COMPACT Collaboration, found that the \u201ctopology\u201d of the universe \u2014 the shape of its geometry, basically \u2014 is likely anything but simple.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers looked at the universe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Herschel\/Cosmic_Microwave_Background_CMB_radiation\" class=\"\">cosmic microwave background<\/a>, which is basically the inherent \u201cglow\u201d of space, dating back to ancient radiation at the dawn of time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For decades now, scientists have argued about how the universe is shaped, in the sense of complex parameters that govern the rules of space and time.
