Japan\u2019s Super-Kamiokande observatory might now be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-00598-9\">collecting a steady trickle of neutrinos from those cataclysms<\/a>, physicists say \u2014 amounting to a few detections a year.<\/p>\n<p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/524148a\">tiny subatomic particles<\/a> are central to understanding what goes on inside a supernova: because they zip out of the star\u2019s collapsing core and across space, they can provide information about any potentially new physics that occur under extreme conditions.<\/p>\n<p>At last month\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-02074-5\">Neutrino 2024<\/a> conference in Milan, Italy, Masayuki Harada, a physicist at the University of Tokyo, <a href=\"https:\/\/agenda.infn.it\/event\/37867\/contributions\/233922\/attachments\/122065\/178295\/20240620_v9.pdf\">revealed<\/a> that the first hints of supernova neutrinos seem to be emerging from the cacophony of particles that the Super-Kamiokande detector collects every day from other sources, such as cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere and nuclear fusion in the Sun\u2019s core. The result \u201cindicates that we started observing a signal\u201d, says Masayuki Nakahata, a physicist at the University of Tokyo and spokesperson for the experiment, which is commonly referred to as Super-K.
