This is what a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07760-y\">recent study<\/a> published in <em>Nature<\/em> hopes to address as a team of researchers investigated the atmosphere of <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/exoplanet-catalog\/hd-189733-b\/\">HD 189,733 b<\/a>, which is a \u201chot Jupiter\u201d located approximately 64 light-years from Earth, discovering this unique exoplanet\u2019s atmosphere contains hydrogen sulfide, which is a byproduct of sulfur and known for its rotten egg-like smell. This discovery holds the potential to help astronomers better understand the atmospheric composition of exoplanets and how these compositions can drive the interior processes of these exoplanets, as well.<\/p>\n<p><em>Artist\u2019s illustration of HD 189,733 b. (Credit: Roberto Molar Candanosa\/Johns Hopkins Univeristy)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHydrogen sulfide is a major molecule that we didn\u2019t know was there,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1050072\">said Dr. Guangwei Fu<\/a>, who is an assistant research scientist at Johns Hopkins University and lead author of the study. \u201cWe predicted it would be, and we know it\u2019s in Jupiter, but we hadn\u2019t really detected it outside the solar system.
