In the USA, for instance, as of December 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_power_in_the_United_States\" target=\"_blank\">it was responsible<\/a> for just 0.45% of the total electricity produced.<\/p>\n<p>Things are changing quite quickly, however, and if the German think tank <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agora-energiewende.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Agora Energiewende<\/a> is right, faster than expected.<\/p>\n<p>The main obstacle to a more widespread adoption of photovoltaic so far, has been cost: solar used to be very expensive compared to coal or gas, but, according to Agora \u2014 that recently commissioned a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agora-energiewende.org\/fileadmin\/downloads\/publikationen\/Studien\/PV_Cost_2050\/AgoraEnergiewende_Current_and_Future_Cost_of_PV_Feb2015_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> on the subject to the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar <a href='http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/energy\/'>Energy<\/a> Systems \u2014 this is no longer true.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/federicoguerrini\/2015\/03\/31\/solar-power-to-become-cheapest-source-of-energy-in-many-regions-by-2025-german-experts-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Solar power still amounts for a small share of net electricity generation around the world.
