At any given time, around 150 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/massive-volcanic-outburst-detected-on-jupiters-hellish-moon-io\">400 or so active volcanoes<\/a> on Io are erupting. It\u2019s constantly spewing out lava and gas; a veritable factory of volcanic excretions.<\/p>\n<p>And, thanks to the Juno probe\u2019s Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) imaging Jupiter and its surrounding environment, we now know a lot more about what a gloriously hot mess Io is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe high spatial resolution of JIRAM\u2019s infrared images, combined with the favorable position of Juno during the flybys, revealed that the whole surface of Io is covered by lava lakes contained in caldera-like features,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/nasas-juno-gets-a-close-up-look-at-lava-lakes-on-jupiters-moon-io\">says astrophysicist Alessandro Mura<\/a> of the National Institute for Astrophysics in Italy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As bristling with volcanoes as a porcupine with quills, Jupiter\u2019s moon Io is the most volcanically active world in the Solar System.
