Since Edwin Hubble realized the universe is always expanding nearly 100 years ago, scientists have used the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a45107360\/jwst-hubble-tension\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Hubble constant<\/a>\u201d in calculations on virtually every scale in the universe. But today, estimates for the Hubble constant don\u2019t always align, with a difference of up to 10 percent between calculations made using different methods. (When someone at NASA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/TECH\/space\/9909\/30\/mars.metric.02\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">mixes up meters and yards<\/a> and loses an entire spacecraft, <em>that\u2019s<\/em> not even a full 10 percent deviation.) <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1361-6382\/ad1a51\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">The paper appears<\/a> in the peer reviewed journal <em>Classical and Quantum Gravity<\/em>. The journal <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/journal\/0264-9381\/page\/Focus_Issue_on_the_Hubble_Constant_Tension\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">has an ongoing, periodically updated \u201cfocus issue\u201d<\/a> specifically about this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/technology\/a28707\/basic-units-of-measurement-could-change-in-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">measurement<\/a> tension, and the editors explain the problem there\u2014scientists can\u2019t say for sure that the different Hubble constants measured are <em>actually<\/em> different, rather than just observation or calibration issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In research published earlier this year, physicists from the University of Hyderabad in India say they\u2019re on the path to solving one of the universe\u2019s biggest outstanding problems.
