It\u2019s an efficient and effective gene-editing technology that <a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/primer\/genomicresearch\/genomeediting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">works<\/a> by tagging a section of DNA with an RNA segment, and then using a protein called Cas9 to cut the DNA at the specified point. Then, the cell\u2019s own DNA machinery works to add or delete DNA.<\/p>\n<p>This technology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-new-gene-editing-technique-has-eliminated-acute-hiv-infection-in-living-animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opens<\/a> up the pathway to a variety of gene-editing applications, from eliminating HIV in living organisms to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/crispr-could-point-to-a-cure-for-huntington-s-disease-suggests-new-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creating<\/a> a potential cure for Huntington\u2019s disease. There is especially high potential for single-gene disorders to be <a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/primer\/genomicresearch\/genomeediting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eradicated<\/a>.
