The ex-Google AI executive worked at AI firm Inflection before Microsoft bought Inflection\u2019s IP and poached most of its staff, including Suleyman, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/microsoft-forms-new-ai-division-to-push-copilot-to-consumers\" target=\"_self\">joined the tech giant in March<\/a>. The employees say that MAI-1 is separate from Inflection\u2019s Pi models.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is reportedly reserving lots of servers with Nvidia graphics cards to train MAI-1, which is expected to be bigger than Microsoft\u2019s previous open-source AI models. This means it will consume tons of electricity during its training phase\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/articles\/power-hungry-ai-is-eating-the-planet-is-it-also-our-best-chance-to-save\" target=\"_self\">broader issue researchers flag<\/a> as harmful to the environment. Microsoft declined to comment on MAI-1, but linked to a Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jkevinscott_im-not-sure-why-this-is-news-but-just-to-activity-7193273937273712643-F5i-?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"(Opens in a new tab)\">post<\/a> from CTO Kevin Scott which states that Microsoft is and will continue to build AI models, some of which \u201chave names like Turing, and MAI.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft is developing a new generative AI model that will take lots of data and energy to train, according to a new report from The Information published Monday.
