For one city in Finland, <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/energy\/varanto-seasonal-thermal-energy-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the answer<\/a> is a giant underground cavern.<\/p>\n<p>Vantaan Energia has announced that it will construct a massive underground seasonal thermal energy storage facility for the city of Vantaa, the country\u2019s fourth-most-populous municipality. The facility will be twice the size of Madison Square Garden, New Atlas <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/energy\/varanto-seasonal-thermal-energy-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is undergoing a huge energy transition,\u201d Vantaan Energia CEO Jukka Toivonen <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/energy\/varanto-seasonal-thermal-energy-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cWind and solar power have become vital technologies in the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. The biggest challenge of the energy transition so far has been the inability to store these intermittent forms of energy for later use.
