It gradually impairs a person\u2019s ability to function until they ultimately become immobile and often develop dementia. In the U.S. alone, over a million people are afflicted with Parkinson\u2019s, and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41531-022-00410-y\">new cases<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1212\/01.wnl.0000247740.47667.03\">overall numbers<\/a> are steadily increasing.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no treatment to slow or halt Parkinson\u2019s disease. Available drugs don\u2019t slow disease progression and can treat only certain symptoms. Medications that work early in the disease, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482140\/#\">such as Levodopa<\/a>, generally become ineffective over the years, necessitating increased doses that can lead to disabling side effects.<\/p>\n<p>Without understanding the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nrg1831\">fundamental molecular cause<\/a> of Parkinson\u2019s, it\u2019s improbable that researchers will be able to develop a medication to stop the disease from steadily worsening in patients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Parkinson\u2019s disease is a neurodegenerative movement disorder that progresses relentlessly.
