What\u2019s more, they shed new light on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/just-being-exposed-to-new-things-makes-us-ready-to-learn-about-them\">learning processes<\/a> in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>A team from Portugal discovered the cells as part of an investigation into how a part of the brain called<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cerebellum\"> the cerebellum<\/a> learns from the environment around us.<\/p>\n<p>The cerebellum processes sensory information related to motor movements. It helps us walk down a crowded street, or pick up a drink without spilling it, and it\u2019s also important for learning: so if we bump into something, we know how to refine our movement to avoid it next time.
