Their surprising findings were published online today in the journal <em><a title=\"Read article in Nature\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07220-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInflammation of brain neurons is usually considered to be a bad thing, since it can lead to neurological problems such as Alzheimer\u2019s and Parkinson\u2019s disease,\u201d said study leader <a title=\"View Jelena Radulovic's faculty profile\" href=\"https:\/\/einsteinmed.edu\/faculty\/16551\/jelena-radulovic\/\">Jelena Radulovic, M.D., Ph.D.<\/a>, professor in the <a title=\"Visit the department of neuroscience\" href=\"https:\/\/einsteinmed.edu\/departments\/neuroscience\/\">Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience<\/a>, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and the Sylvia and Robert S. Olnick Chair in Neuroscience at Einstein. \u201cBut our findings suggest that inflammation in certain neurons in the brain\u2019s hippocampal region is essential for making long-lasting memories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hippocampus has long been known as the brain\u2019s memory center. Dr. Radulovic and her colleagues found that a stimulus sets off a cycle of DNA damage and repair within certain hippocampal neurons that leads to stable memory assemblies\u2014clusters of brain cells that represent our past experiences.
