From this rugged swath of high desert landscape dotted with sagebrush, visitors who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/these-national-parks-are-hosting-stargazing-festivals-in-2023-180982353\/\">stay up late<\/a> can see large numbers of stars, planets and other celestial bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s surprising sometimes to see that many stars all at once,\u201d says Bob Hackett, executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernoregon.org\/\">Travel Southern Oregon<\/a>, to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/mar\/15\/dark-sky-sanctuary-oregon-outback\"><em>Guardian<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Dani Anguiano. \u201cIt catches you, and it makes you pause because you feel like you can touch it \u2026 That vastness of the whole cosmos up there\u2014it almost makes you get closer to the people you\u2019re with on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calling all stargazers: Oregon is now home to the largest Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world.
