Humans might be next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p><iframe style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto; width: 100%; aspect-ratio: 4\/3; object-fit: contain;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z7OsEGT9d3o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope;\n   picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A person who lost their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/series\/future-of-fertility\/uterus-transplant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">uterus<\/a> to cancer, for example, could have an embryo created in the lab, like in IVF, but implant it in an artificial womb for gestation, rather than using a human surrogate, which is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/news-archive\/2018\/the-ethics-of-surrogacy-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ethically fraught<\/a> practice.<\/p>\n<p>By eliminating the need for surrogacy, artificial wombs could also make it easier for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2022\/oct\/01\/how-gay-parenthood-through-surrogacy-became-a-battleground\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gay couples<\/a> to have biological children. Further on the horizon, if scientists can replicate their success creating embryos from the DNA of same-sex <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/science\/mice-with-two-dads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mice<\/a> in people, any two people might one day be able to have biological children related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freethink.com\/science\/making-babies-from-skin-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>both<\/em> of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Artificial wombs would fill in the critical gap between IVF and incubators.
