The proof-of-concept achievement could be scaled up to, eventually, produce enough insulin to ensure availability and reduced cost for all diabetics requiring the life-maintaining drug.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to rely on their own supply due to <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/medical\/regenerate-pancreatic-beta-cells-insulin-type-1-diabetes\/\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">damaged pancreatic cells<\/a>, type 1 diabetics need injectable insulin to live. As do some type 2 diabetics. The <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/extranet.who.int\/prequal\/news\/human-insulin-master-file-h-imf#:~:text=It%20has%20been%20estimated%20that, high%2Dincome%20countries%20as%20well.\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">World Health Organization<\/a> estimates that of those who require insulin, between <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/drc.bmj.com\/content\/9\/1\/e002373\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">150 and 200 million<\/a> people worldwide, only about half are being treated with it. Access to <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/medical\/plant-based-insulin-lettuce-oral\/\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">insulin<\/a> remains inadequate in many low-and middle-income countries \u2013 and some high-income countries \u2013 and its cost and unavailability have been well-documented.<\/p>\n<p>In a newly published study led by the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo, researchers say they may have developed a way of eliminating insulin scarcity and reducing its cost using cows.
