The device could be used to help get drinking water to people left stranded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/tag\/extreme-weather\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"68\" title=\"Extreme weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extreme weather<\/a> events.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Donglei \u201cEmma\u201d Fan \u2014 an associate professor in the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Cockrell School of Engineering \u2014 along with her research team, was able to create the device using a specially designed \u201cbranched\u201d electrode, now patented.<\/p>\n<p>The electrode, when electrified, created a field that E. coli and other bacterial cells are attracted to, causing them to \u201cswim\u201d into the electrode branches.
