The discovery highlights just <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/golden-egg-recovered\" class=\"\">how little we know<\/a> about the oceans covering much of our planet. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/education.nationalgeographic.org\/resource\/ocean\/\" class=\"\">recent estimates<\/a>, more than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped, let alone explored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tallest is over one-and-a-half miles in height, and we didn\u2019t really know it was there,\u201d Schmidt Ocean Institute\u2019s Jyotika Virmani \u2014 whose team has been studying \u201cseamounts\u201d from on board the vessel Falkor \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2416333-enormous-underwater-mountains-discovered-off-west-coast-of-americas\/\" class=\"\">told <em>New Scientist<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using sonar equipment, Virmani and team investigated gravity anomalies while sailing down from Costa Rica to Chile.
