{"id":183137,"date":"2024-02-20T09:28:17","date_gmt":"2024-02-20T15:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2024\/02\/this-startups-tech-turns-co2-into-seashell-dust"},"modified":"2024-02-20T09:28:17","modified_gmt":"2024-02-20T15:28:17","slug":"this-startups-tech-turns-co2-into-seashell-dust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2024\/02\/this-startups-tech-turns-co2-into-seashell-dust","title":{"rendered":"This startup\u2019s tech turns CO2 into seashell dust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/this-startups-tech-turns-co2-into-seashell-dust2.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>UCLA spinout Equatic has developed a carbon removal technology it believes can help the world meet its climate change goals \u2014 by converting CO2 in the ocean into seashell dust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The challenge: <\/strong>To prevent the worst predicted effects of climate change, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/initiatives\/carbon-removal\">experts say<\/a> we need to not only slash our carbon emissions, but also remove and permanently store some of the CO2 that\u2019s already been released.<\/p>\n<p>The ocean does this naturally: it already absorbs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/news\/quantifying-ocean-carbon-sink\">about 31%<\/a> of human-made carbon emissions, but there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/features\/OceanCarbon\">limit<\/a> to the amount of CO2 that seawater can absorb before it starts to release the carbon back into the atmosphere.
